Enviromental Policy
With the increasing societal emphasis on the environment, environmental responsibility has become a part of management activities by its own rights. Consequently, a company, as a responsible global citizen, must also direct attention towards aspects of its activities that has environmental impact, and go beyond pollution prevention.
"The International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for Pollution Prevention" includes environmental management issues. The commonly used term, "The International Safety Management Code" (abbreviated "the ISM Code") may, to some degree, obscure this important requirement.
The ISM Code partially reflects this development by using the term "environmental protection" in the functional requirements of the ISM Safety Management System (SMS), although the more restricted term "pollution prevention" is used in the Code Title and other places in the Code.
Environmental management in the offshore industry, as a voluntary activity, has been the focus of attention for many years. Important progress has been made in the reduction and prevention of pollution to the sea. The overall aim of the ISO 14001 standard is "to support environmental protection and prevention of pollution in balance with socio-economic needs".
Whereas the ISM Code will be mandatory for (most) ships, and offshore and oil & gas companies, the ISO 14001 is a voluntary standard in environmental management. SeaTRAX Singapore (STS) follows the ISM Code's guidelines for Environmental Management.
We shall identify and specify the environmental elements in the ISM Code. Further, a review of MARPOL, ISO14001, EMAS and other relevant schemes shall be done to identify any additional or specific items and aspects.
STS's guidelines shall be structured to clearly identify overlapping requirements and requirements which are specific to each standard/code; and in a manner such that the differences and similarities are clearly shown.
